Invest in Yourself

Written by Joanie Yanusas-Maughmer, Certified Professional Life, Business, and Retreat Coach

The best investment you can make is in yourself.  It doesn’t matter if it involves a seminar or a day at the spa, investing in yourself always pays off.  If we don’t take care of mind, body and spirit, we will end up feeling burned out and stressed. Even mini breaks, such as a walk in the park or a nap, help us refresh and rejuvenate. Investing in yourself is about caring enough to put yourself and your well being first.

When we think of investing, we usually think of putting money in the bank.  Just as money in the bank will yield a return, so will investing in yourself.  Just as compound interest will exponentially increase your savings, investing in ourselves provides a strong foundation in our lives and will continually provide support we can build on.  Unlike a bank that will provide an overdraft if we come short, the bank of life does not provide such a service.  If we have not built up a reserve, we will find ourselves in a jam.  When you have been investing in yourself, you’ll be able to make a withdrawal from the bank of life and still have a reserve to draw on.

There are many ways to invest in yourself.  Some examples include 1)Taking enough time off to be refreshed and creative,2) Improving life and business skills, such as earning a degree or taking adult education classes that teach you something new and tap into your creativity, 3) Cultivating friendships, 4) Spending time with family and loved ones, 5)Exercising to maintain a healthy mind and body. 6) Hiring a Professional Life Coach

Too many people think they can get away with not investing in themselves.  They either neglect it altogether or think investing in themselves is a selfish thing to do.  The truth is that if we neglect our well-being we will wake up one day without necessary life or business skills, with serious health issues, with relationships that are in shambles, and/or feeling burned out.

A few years ago an illness in my family brought home to me the reality that our health is the most valuable thing we have.  If we don’t have our health, everything becomes a challenge.  Although we cannot prevent all illnesses, we don’t have to encourage them. Reducing stress, feeding our minds and bodies with healthy thoughts and substances and nurturing our souls can make a huge difference.  Caring for YOU is a gift that gives back for a lifetime.
